The reservoir is the Engineer's gate, the first few minutes of rush before the burning begins, the shin splints, the stomach clenched in agony. It is conversations within breaths, icy throats, stinging eyes. It's the pile of sweatshirts and water bottles on that garbage can, the wistful looks at the third house, labored laughs at the ducks, the sighing as we turn the curve and another mile stretches out before us. It is them pushing me, getting into my head, the adrenaline as we see the bridge with piles of clothes, the feeble sprints past buildings of spirals and churches and the half-crazed grins at the ramp, that blessed ramp into wobbly legs and collapsing on the ground, relieved to have made it again.

Venturing outside in the heat, clutching an ice cold water bottle that soon turned cool and then lukewarm and then just plain hot. Staring at my reflection in the subway door, dressed in blue as if to invoke cool winds to my skin, an effort that clearly failed. I realized the beauty of walking on the side of the street in shade, the temptation that is a funnel cake on top of a 2 inch thick layer of cream and strawberries. Admired the ice cream truck, but walked across the street to greet wafels and dinges. My friend bought me a WMD as a belated birthday gift :) So freaking delicious. Ahhhhh. Treks to union square, the container store (i need glass candy jars. for reals), sitting in the aisle at staples, since gossip was so much better than notebooks, searching, seeking, hunting for lemonade.

I have this vision of summer. The summer I've never had, but the summer I imagine skinny girls in denim shorts and the perfect beach bag, who listen to indie music and go thrifting and find jeans that fit perfectly or a flannel shirt that is worn down just enough to be cool, have. The kind of summer with beach trips every weekend, coney island and a stack of polaroids, the ferris wheel in the background of all their shots. hitting air conditioned stores in union square, in large aviators and every hair in place, but later they run through the fountain in washington square park. they laugh, push each other into the spray, as the golden hour arrives and they look like painted angels, to the envy of everyone else.

I'm trying to create my own summer vision.

Red-eyed alice, dogs, puppies, big and small, frolicking on a hill, high-velocity sprinklers, "wait i'm wet!" little kids swings, more water, slipping and sliding, water fights, droplets in a wave, scattered, flung through the air, "cold cold cold!!" jumping, aqua toes, wide smiles, twisting her hair as the water joins its brethren.
